- TITLE THE NUNS, THE MIGRANTS, & THE FASCISTS
- LOGLINE In the heart of Almería's "Sea of Plastic," an atypical and hilarious group of nuns navigates the turbulent waters of the immigration issue. On one hand, they teach Spanish and serve as a social support network for hundreds of immigrants—nearly all undocumented and mostly Muslim—who work in the area's greenhouses. On the other, they coexist and attend Mass with a native population that, while employing those very same immigrants, feels threatened by their growing presence.

- SYNOPSIS “We live with one foot in each world,” says Fátima Santaló, one of four nuns who share a modest house in El Ejido, with the explicit vocation of acting as a bridge and leading by example. During the week, the nuns go to great lengths to reach places where public institutions fall short, equipping their students — hundreds among the more than 100,000 North- and West-African migrants who live in squalid conditions and produce 60% of the fruits and vegetables consumed in Europe — with language skills, legal advice, and social and labor mediation to help them face an increasingly hostile environment.
On weekends, in between romantic comedies, small assemblies to distribute scarce resources and chores, walks on the beach, and the occasional tinto de verano, they strive to take part in the social and religious life of a fervently Catholic local population fearful of a migrant “invasion,” and which is increasingly embracing the far right. In the background looms the ghost of the so-called “Events” of the year 2000, the first major violent crisis to emerge in Spain around immigration — one which, the nuns fear, has still not healed and could well erupt again.
“You can feel how tense the situation is,” says in a whisper. “All it will take is one spark.” - DIRECTED BY Álvaro Guzmán Bastida
