- SYNOPSIS "We live with one foot in each world," says Fatima Santaló, one of four progressive Catholic nuns living together in El Ejido, a conservative agricultural town immersed in a sea of plastic greenhouses. Nearly 100,000 migrants, mostly Muslim and all undocumented, work in the fields in scorching heat producing 60% of Europe's vegetables. In the school founded by the nuns, fishermen rehearse plays, mothers learn to pronounce the r's and university graduates turned farmhands sit next to tailors who crossed the sea without knowing how to swim. Nuns attend mass with the same bosses who exploit these workers, and then drink vermouth, watch Richard Gere romantic comedies or take condoms to whorehouses. Outside, the far right resurfaces. "You can see how tense the situation is," Fatima says. "All it takes is a spark."
