Il Sorpasso

Rome is empty during the Ferragosto holiday. Bruno Cortona (Vittorio Gassman), a forty-something braggart is driving his sports car with the roof down all over the city looking for a packet of cigarettes and a phone. He stops to drink water from a tap and spies a young man watching him. After a short conversation, the young man, Roberto Mariani (Jean-Louis Trintignant), invites him back to his flat to make his phone call. Cortona finds out that Roberto is alone in Rome studying for his exams. The sweet-talking Cortona convinces him to travel with him for a few days. That’s the start of a whirlwind trip, full of exciting and extravagant events along the roads of Italy.
