Franka Louka is a famous concert cellist and teacher in Soviet-occupied Czechoslovakia. Having lost his job in the orchestra, his only option to get by is BY PLAYING at funerals. But he has run up large debts and, when Mr. Broz the grave-digger says that he could solve all his money problems by marrying a young Russian girl who wants to get Czechoslovakian nationality, he accepts. She takes advantage of the situation to emigrate to West Germany and her lover, leaving her five-year-old son with her grandmother. But, when the grandmother dies, Kolya has to live with his step-father. The story takes place in the years before the Velvet Revolution in Prague. Zdenek Sverak, the leading actor and scriptwriter, is the father of the Director.
