BORN IN GAMBIA
Hassan is a street kid. His brother was accused of witchcraft and burnt alive in front of him. His stepfather says that he carries the devil inside him, so he runs away to avoid being murdered. Hassan always carries a tape-recorder and uses it to tell us about his life, the lives of other kids and about a beautiful country that remains anchored firmly in its dangerous traditions.
The Ma’di are an archetype for many other African peoples. Colonialism not only attacked their political and social structure, but also divided their land into three different States. In addition, largely due to the war, the traditional structure changed quickly and without control, so that their culture is in dire peril. The players in this documentary highlight the need to revive their culture, but also question certain aspects of their traditions.
