Through Luis, born in Faial and emigrated to the United States after the eruption of the Capelinhos (1957-58), the film compares the past, islands in the middle of the ocean with a subsistence economy, with the present, where science, education and responsible tourism coexist with the sea. On a day-to-day basis, we accompany Carlos, a former lookout who is now a cetacean spotter; Norberto, a pioneer guide who applies distances, times and boat rotation on camera; and Lisa, a scientist who documents sperm whales through photo-identification. With a focus on the present, supported by archival footage, the documentary shows the Azorean reality, environmental and conservation practices and their impact on the community. A hopeful story about living off the ocean without depleting it, today and tomorrow.
